Controls on the Precipitation of Carbonate Minerals Within Marine Sediments

چکیده

The vast majority of carbonate minerals in modern marine sediments are biogenic, derived from the skeletal remains organisms living ocean. However, can also precipitate abiotically within sediments, and this mineral precipitation has been suggested as a third major, isotopically distinct, sink global carbon cycle, particularly important earlier Earth history. Here we present compilation pore fluid data compare sulfate, calcium, phosphate magnesium concentrations with alkalinity to explore emerging relationships what drives sediments. Our shows that gradient sulfate correlates strongly well these correlations improve dramatically where methane is present. We note sedimentary fluids high concentration alkalinity, which may indicate suppression presence phosphate. be used highlight both dolomite formation dolomitization previously deposited calcium occurring. how saturation state changes function concentrations, pH, suggest reason why never fully depleted fluids. conclude methane, anaerobic oxidation helps promote states for minerals.

Experimental Inhibition of Carbonate Precipitation by Sulfite Minerals

Introduction: Volcanic and hydrothermal supply of reducing gases to the early atmosphere of Mars likely surpassed the slow supply of oxidizing power from hydrogen escape to space, resulting in a neutral or mildly reducing atmosphere and in geochemical cycles that operated very differently than they do on the modern Earth. We have recently suggested that one such difference between the modern an...

Bioenergetic Controls on Microbial Ecophysiology in Marine Sediments

Marine sediments constitute one of the most energy-limited habitats on Earth, in which microorganisms persist over extraordinarily long timescales with very slow metabolisms. This habitat provides an ideal environment in which to study the energetic limits of life. However, the bioenergetic factors that can determine whether microorganisms will grow, lie dormant, or die, as well as the selectiv...

Controls on authigenic carbonate precipitation at cold seeps along the convergent margin off Costa Rica

[1] Five sediment cores from cold seeps at the forearc off Costa Rica were used to explore the relationship between fluid advection, dissolved Ca concentrations in upward migrating fluids, and authigenic CaCO3 precipitation. A numerical transport‐reaction model was used to determine rates of anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM), CaCO3 precipitation, and benthic fluxes of solutes. Production of ...

Effects of microalgal communities on reflectance spectra of carbonate sediments in subtidal optically shallow marine environments

This study was conducted in subtidal areas around Lee Stocking Island, Bahamas, to investigate how microalgal biomass and community structure affect hyperspectral reflectance of sediments. Hyperspectral reflectance was measured on the surfaces of sediment cores collected from several types of carbonate sediments and habitats. Subsequently, photosynthetic and photoprotective pigments within the ...

Biological Influences on Seafloor Carbonate Precipitation

The sedimentary record reveals first-order changes in the locus of carbonate precipitation through time, documented in the decreasing abundance of carbonate precipitation on the seafloor. This pattern is most clearly recorded by the occurrence of seafloor carbonate crystal fans (bladed aragonite pseudomorphs neomorphosed to calcite or dolomite), which have a distinct temporal distribution, ubiq...
